Church Windows is written for and dedicated to Dr. Kent Eshelman, professor of tuba and euphonium at Baylor University, with whom I had the great pleasure of studying with for my master's degree.

The piece's title comes from a brief moment of inspiration as I attended a trumpet recital that was hosted in a local church in Waco, Texas. At the church, there was an additional side chapel, a smaller sanctuary, with a wall adorned with magnificent stained glass windows. However, these are not actually the windows I reference. High on the walls in the nave were opaque windows with milky, white streaks in them. As the late afternoon sun shone through them, a humble yet sublime beauty emerged from its simple form. It was in this moment that I again appreciated that sublime beauty which can come from anywhere, like in this humble window, even compared to the stained glass mural just a few yards down the hall.

The piece was written, and completed in the summer of 2025, to capture that essence of which I felt that day, and I thought no better concept to capture the beautiful sound in Kent Eshelman's playing that I sought to model after in my own playing.
