The Quest was originally commissioned by Matthew Rose as part of my PocketOrchestra program, where solos are written with pre-recorded orchestral accompaniments. Our goal was to create a large-scale programmatic work, fit with several themes that convey a story about courage, and the means to employ it. The piece's structure closely follows Joseph Campbell's notes on the monomyth, better known as the hero's journey.

The piece showed potential as more than a storytelling device, and was heavily edited after its first premiere to increase the difficulty and act as a full concerto for tuba. This version includes both the piano accompaniment as well as the recorded orchestral accompaniment.

A fully-realized orchestral score is available, but parts have not been created. If you wish to compete with this piece, or perform it with a full ensemble, please use the contact form at the bottom of the page to reach out.
